Online Curriculum Projects
Online Curriculum Projects are curriculum-based activities for students using the internet. These project can have students working collaboratively with partners in the field to make connections outside school. At the end of the project student share their finding on an internet website or blog, for other classes to view.
An example of an online curriculum would be the, "Pumpkin Seed Count" by Jen L. Wagner. This project is for students in pre-k to 3rd grade. This project helps reinforce basic math skills such addition and estimation. This project does cost a little money for the teacher to do, but not much. For this project the teacher will have to purchase a 5lb pumpkin. Before carving the pumpkins students will estimate how many seeds are in the pumpkin. Then the teacher will carve the pumpkin, students can take turn scooping and counting the seeds from the pumpkin. After the step the class will compare their prediction to what they actual counted. The teacher will then record the results of the classes finding to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to share this other classes. This project also allows the classes to talk with other classes who are working on the same project. Teachers can to this by Skype, email, phone or even joining a group on Edmodo, an education social networking website. Here are some results from the last project.
This project comes with different types of activities and lesson plans that teachers can choose to do with their class. Such as a K-W-L chart, what i know about pumpkins, what i want to know about pumpkins, and what i have learned about pumpkins. To get more information for this project from Jennifer L. Wagner's website projects by Jen, please click here.
I would use this project in a first grade classroom using the following standard.
